I tried Needle-Free Lip Injections with the Hyaluron Pen

Take an inside look at each step of the process and get in-depth answers from a Hyaluron Pen trainer and leader in the beauty industry.

This week I dove into learning everything there is to know about the up-and-coming procedure of needle-free lip injections (and I even got to test it out myself!). These days, everyone wants to have a perfectly plump pout, but not everyone is comfortable with going under the needle to achieve it.

One common misconception about lip fillers is that after one treatment you risk having extreme and disastrous results. But in reality, it is nearly impossible to achieve such drastic results in one session. For most clients, one full syringe of lip filler produces incredibly natural results and many clients even find themselves coming back for more. For my needle-free lip fillers we used one syringe (1ML) of Juvederm and later in this article you will be able to see how subtle and natural the end result turned out to be!

Every client’s procedure is completely personalized to fit their face shape and desired end result. For my treatment, we added the full syringe to my top lip to help make my top and bottom lip more symmetrical.

Questions I Had About The Procedure:

What Exactly is the Hyaluron Pen?

The Hyaluron Pen is a ‘pen-shaped’ device that uses pressure to push hyaluronic acid through the epidermis of the lip. Since there are no needles involved, this process is considered to be a safer and more comfortable way to plump your lips.

What Is Being Injected Into My Lip?

The Hyaluron Pen uses pressure to push Hyaluronic Acid through your epidermis and into your lips. So what is Hyaluronic Acid? Hyaluronic Acid is produced naturally in your body to help the skin retain moisture. Because your body naturally produces this substance, negative reactions to the product are incredibly rare. When hyaluronic acid is added to the lips it helps to give your lips a plumped, moisturized, and more youthful glow.

How New Is This Pen And Why Haven’t I Heard Of It Before?

Although new to the beauty industry, the Hyaluron Pen has actually been around for a long time. Commonly used in the medical field to inject insulin into the skin for diabetics, the technology of this pen has been long tested and perfected. Recently, with the rise in popularity of lip treatments, the Hyaluron Pen has been adapted to inject lip filler as well, catering to needle-shy customers who are still looking to enhance their lips.

Is it semi-permanent/Permanent?

One of my favorite things about this procedure is that it is considered to be a temporary beauty treatment. Hyaluronic acid injections are incredibly safe and trusted because since you body produces this substance naturally and does not often recognize the injections as a foreign substance. Similarly to the way your body metabolizes its own hyaluronic acid, these injections will eventually be metabolized by your body as well. Unlike some injectables that stimulate collagen production but are not fully metabolized by the body, hyaluronic acid fillers not only add volume but they help to maintain your lips natural moisture and ‘plumpness’.

How Long Does It Last?

The results of this treatment last 4–6 months. Although the Hyaluronic Acid found in your body and the Hyaluron Acid being inserted into your skin are similar, a good Hyaluronic Acid filler will be cross-linked which helps to slow down the speed at which your body can metabolize it. Fillers that stay in the skin forever and are not naturally metabolized by the body (like silicone for example) can cause a plethora of issues such as inflammation, relocation, and infection. Taking the risks of long lasting fillers into account, the fact that you would need to come in every 4–6 months for a refill is actually a very good thing!

Let’s Say Worst Case Scenario I Don’t Like It, What’s Next?

Okay so let’s say you hate it. Is it the end of the world? Not at all. In the unlikely case that you are unsatisfied with your treatment, Hyaluronic Acid fillers can be partially or completely dissolved with an injection of an enzyme called Hyaluronidase which will help to dissolve the Hyaluronic Acid in your lips.

Are there any restrictions client-wise?

There are very few restrictions on who can receive this treatment but pregnant women, people who are severely allergy sensitive, and anyone with extreme skin conditions should speak with their doctor before receiving this treatment.

What If I Have An Allergic Reaction To The Hyaluronic Acid?

I once saw a show where someone was allergic to water, so I can’t say that an allergic reaction to hyaluronic acid fillers are impossible, but due to the fact that your body recognizes the substance as something it produces naturally, it is extremely unlikely.

Does It Hurt?

Personally, I did not have any pain throughout the entire procedure, I actually did not feel anything at all. Before the treatment, your injector should offer you numbing cream since although needle-free, the process can be uncomfortable if no numbing cream is used. I will admit that the popping sound of the pen was a little bit startling at first, but I was given a countdown before the sound each time which helped me to prepare for the sound. And lets be real- I would much rather hear a loud noise than feel any pain!

What Is The Aftercare?

Avoid rigorous exercise, makeup, and keep your lips clean and hydrated for the first 48 hours after your treatment to prevent infection.

Is There Pre-Care I Need To Do Before My Appointment?

24 hours before your appointment you will want to avoid ingesting any NSAIDs, alcohol, or supplements such as fish oils that can increase your risk of bruising. You also will want to arrive at your appointment without makeup on and let your treatment provider know if you have a history of cold sores so that they can give you treatment advice before and after your lip enhancement.

How Long Does It Take?

Numbing beforehand will take between 10–30 minutes and the injection process itself usually takes about 15–20 minutes.

Will I Bleed or Bruise?

Compared to normal lip injections it is a lot less likely that you will bleed or bruise with the Hyaluron Pen but you have to understand that it is possible! Your treatment provider should check for veins in your lips and try to avoid them during the process, but they can be difficult to find/avoid. Needle or not, anytime substance is pushed into a vein you may have slight bleeding or bruising.

In What Way Is This Safer Than Traditional Filler Methods?

One of the major risks of fillers is that they could be injected too deep which runs the risk of blocking blood vessels. When using the Hyaluron Pen to infuse your lips with Hyaluronic Acid, it is anatomically impossible to accidentally inject the substance in this way. Since injections using the Hyaluron Pen cannot go as deep into the lips, they do not pose the same risk as traditional injection methods.

The Process:

Step 1: Numbing

Numbing cream is applied to the lips.

Step 2: Cleansing

The lips and face are thoroughly cleansed to ensure that no bacteria is pushed into the skin during the procedure.

Step 3: Comfort/Planning

A hairnet and eye mask are applied to keep your hair out of the way and ensure that you are comfortable.

Step 4: Check For Veins

A light can be used to check for veins that will be avoided during the process.

Step 5: Injecting With The Pen

Although it looks like there is a needle at the end of the pen, it is actually an open space where the serum is pushed out of the pen and through your epidermis.

Step 6: Massage

Your lips are then lightly massaged to distribute the Hyaluronic Acid evenly throughout your lips.

Step 7: Results

All done! You get to checkout the results and get stoked about your hydrated and happy plumped pout!

As you can tell by my before and after pictures, the results of one session are extremely natural! For those who are worried about over-injecting, it often takes at least 3–5 sessions to achieve ‘Kylie Jenner’ lips. It is also very important for customers who are looking for drastic results to understand that these results often can’t be achieved in one session. I loved my experience with the Hyaluron Pen and would highly recommend it to anyone wanting lip enhancement.

  1. I’ve never heard of this procedure, it sounds really interesting! What is the cost?

    Liked by 2 people

    • The cost is going to rely completely on the provider, but it cost the provider less to preform than most filler injections so you can expect it to be either cheaper or about the same price they are asking for their filler injections

  3. This is really interesting. How much does the procedure typically cost?

    • The procedure cost will depend on the quality of product the artist is using, how much filler you are wanting, and differ regionally depending on the cost of living/ providing services in that area, but here in Beverly Hills the procedure is offered at about $395 per treatment 🙂

What is the reasoning when looking for veins and vessels, if there is no chance of injecting into one ?

    • Great question! You definitely can still inject into veins with this method because even though there is no needle you are still pushing filler into the skin and therefore there is a risk that the filler could pass through a vein. This method is less risky than injecting with a needle because needles can very easily be pushed too deep into the skin where the facial artery runs up to the eye, risking in the worst case blindness. Although the method using the Hyaluron pen can still hit veins, it does not have that same risk of being injected too deep where larger veins and the facial artery are.

The risk of injecting into an artery (and possibly causing any embolism problem) is a filler risk not a Botox risk I thought? Botox is not injectors deeply and is injected into a Muscle..Hyaluronic acid can cause a problem if injected into an artery..

    • Hi Anonymous! Correct, it is more of a filler risk which is why we compare normal filler injection methods to Hyaluron pen filler methods which reduce the risk due to the depth the pen can inject compared to a free-handed syringe. I don’t believe I bring up Botox anywhere in the article but if I do please let me know where so I can clear up any confusion!
